Who are we?
Savi Jaya Development Foundation was created in 2010 under the guidance of Janaka Loronsu Hewa, who had been active in supporting people affected by the 2004 tsunami for many years by then. The foundation's main purpose is to empower local vulnerqble communities. It has been active for more than 15 years. In this time, it has brought together at least 100 villages (and around 6,000 people) and supported members to help themselves in order to help others.
After many years of generous support from the Ayubuwan organization, an NGO from Luxembourg, Savi Jaya became independent in 2019. Then Janaka made contact with volunteers from Workaway, who brought their talent and experiences to the team. They were excited to continue this amazing work, and see the community grow and strengthen.
However, the pandemic and then the energy crisis were devastating, and affected vulnerable rural communities the worst. Now Savi Jaya Foundation's focus is helping school children and university students by fundraising to provide them with the school supplies they need. We believe this is the best way to a brighter future for the country. Nonetheless, we also help poor families with children access decent housing.
The long-term vision is to re-establish the model that was doing so well before the pandemic. We are also working on setting up an education facility for school age children in Weligama, where they can access quality education for free, or at an affordable cost.
Special thanks to Ayubowan NGO
First of all we want to thank the Ayubowan NGO from Luxembourg. A special thanks goes to
Mrs. Claire Steffen,
Mrs. Nelly Winandy,
Mrs. Josée Thillmany,
Mrs. Viviane Schmit,
Mr. Thierry petit,
Ms.Michele Heusbourg.
Because of their help it was possible to create the Savi Jaya Foundation in 2010 and to support Weligama families and their children.
And a big thank you to all other members of the Ayubowan team and later the volunteers Ms. Yana Weis and Ms. Lesley Pleger as well.

Our show of appreciation to many Work Away volunteers
Since 2019, Savi Jaya has been supported by international volunteers.
The Kirala Garden Resort is our hostel and guest house here in Weligama, which helps to fund Savi Jaya.
This idea came from volunteers, who were here in 2019. They suggested that this would provide a sustainable income for the project, meaning it no longer needed to depend only on donations.
Special thanks go to:
